VAMHS ABSTRACT – Dr Melissa A Burr-Dixon
Title:
The Eschatological and Temporal Manifestation of a Deliberate Gratitude Praxis
Background and Rationale:
To explore the impact of adopting a daily practice of gratitude.
Aim and Objective:
To outline the cognitive, emotional, physical, spiritual, and social benefits of gratitude.
Methodology:
Survey involving over 200 participants.
Results, Discussion and Conclusions:
The survey highlighted the frequency in which participants express gratitude. A comparison
was made between the focus of gratitude past, present and future. The survey also showed
a clear correlation between expressions of gratitude and age. The survey also highlighted
the categories that elicit a gratitude response.
The research depicted the positive fruits of a gratitude posture in terms of relationships,
sleep habits, overall health, decision-making, financial management and overall happiness.
The research emphasised the importance of recognising pitfalls, obstacles and cautions and
encouraged the wise and appropriate implementation of this practice.
Implications
The survey and research results show that incorporating the practice of gratitude would
enable clients to increase their overall sense of health and satisfaction. This practice also
prevents or reduces many common symptoms such as anxiety, stress, anger, and
depression. Counsellors will be able to offer evidence-based reasons for this adaptation and
will be contributing to the clients’ general state of wellbeing.
