Family Therapist
Prathiba is a clinical child, family therapist with a practice experience in cross-cultural spaces including Indigenous, refugee, asylum and CALD communities, spanning over 15+yrs. She entered the professional western world as a mental health counsellor, and consciously held her roots in traditional yoga by being curious on bridging traditional healing aspects of yoga into the area of mental health. Her formal qualifications come from gaining Masters in Clinical Family Therapy, Dyadic Psychotherapy and Postgraduate diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (child adolescent focus). She is a certified Yoga Teacher through her Advance Diploma from Patanjali Yoga School of India (YSI). Five years ago, she started on her path to become a Pranayama yoga therapist through a guided teacher from Kaivalyadhama Institute, for key health areas.
Prathiba’s passion is to embed culture and relational recovery into western models of individual treatment for children and families in regional, rural and remote areas around the world...and play a healing part with professionals through supervision, training and workshops to help restore identity and dignity with Indigenous and Refugee sons, daughters, fathers and mothers. She provides supervision, mentoring and workshops through a cross-cultural lens, by acknowledging that pain and suffering is universal, but our academic trainings in psychology and mental health diagnostic standards is founded on industrialized western middle-class functioning. She takes ethical responsibility to translate these learnings into cross cultural practice with duty of care.
COVID-19 pandemic has helped challenge traditional operation of clinical service, and Prathiba therapy services are embracing the creative use of technology to serve marginalized sectors in a cost-effective manner.
Topic Outline
This presentation aims to help support those professionals to support children and teens require with a framework to guide their interventions and how to tweak interventions. The presentation will touch on a broader level at critical ages, cross-cultural needs that would be important for professionals to help integrate developmental theories, adolescent brain theories and neuroscience of trauma theories into the context of ones’ work with the child/teen and their family.
