Dr Arthur Wooters
Head of Counselling - Stirling College
Arthur Wouters obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from in South Africa.
Direct exposure to the unjust imprisonment of political detainees led Art to change his
focus from clinical to community psychology and counselling. Art completed his
doctorate while working in the area of empowering people facing racial oppression. He
emigrated to Melbourne in 2006 with members of his family to take up a position in
Counselling at Tabor College, Victoria. He has headed up the Stirling school of
counselling for the past 6 years which has recently become part of the Australian
College of Ministry (ACOM). Art draws meaning from participating in the professional
and personal development of students at the college and the growth of his clients in
part-time practice. Art’s academic interests include counselling and psychotherapy,
religion and psychology, peaceable cross-cultural initiatives and conversations between
psychology and theology. Art and his wife live on the Mornington Peninsula and their
relationship/s, the beach, nature, music, cycling and an American cruiser motorcycle
contribute to their enjoyment.
Topic Outline
VAMHS 2023 synopsis of presentation by Dr Arthur Wouters
Posttraumatic growth has been found to occur in many individuals following a traumatic
event or other stressful situations. The purpose of the paper is to introduce the
phenomenon of PTG, review the critical issue of core belief and narrative disruption and
revision, and to discuss the significant role of key persons in the survivor’s growth. The
objective is to unpack the role and tasks of these “expert companions” (Tedeschi & Moore,
2013, 2021) with a view to helping others to facilitate a natural process of PTG. The results
of this inquiry are applied to the presenter’s training of respected non-professionals in the
Asia Pacific region with understanding of the stresses in the local community as well as
sharing the survivor’s worldview and belief system. .
Learning outcomes:
Participants will
1. Identify and explain the occurrence and elements of PTG
2. Discuss the significance of PTG for their practice
3. Assess the literature’s underscoring of the importance of expert companionship in
PTG
4. Critically evaluate expert companionship as a framework for training non-
professionals in facilitation skills in a specific community setting
