Jim Schirmer is a Lecturer in the Master of Counselling Program, and has taught into that program in
a variety of roles since 2012. He specialises in teaching and supervising ethics and professional
practice, counselling theories, family therapy, and practitioner-research, and is active in scholarship
of teaching in this area. His background is in the humanities - specifically philosophy, ethics and
theology - and maintains an interest in exploring the integration of these intellectual traditions
within the theory and practice of psychotherapy. His doctoral research follows this trend in exploring
ways to identify and develop virtues, strengths and values in the character of the counsellor which
have potential to enhance the outcome of psychotherapy. He brings close to 20 years’ experience in
the human services field, specialising in working with adolescents and with refugee survivors of
trauma, and maintains close connections to the field of professional practice.
Topic Outline
Increasing complexity in case formulation through integrated theory: a process for trainees and
supervisees
Jim Schirmer
University of Queensland, Australia
The objective of this workshop will introduce participants to a three-stage framework of case
formulation developed to increase complexity of thinking for counsellors and psychotherapists. This
model was developed to overcome some standard critiques of standard models of case formulation
which have emphasises deficit models of human function, insufficient attention to cultural and
contextual dynamics, and an atheoretical orientation that fails to draw on the insights of robust
theories of psychotherapy. Along with introducing the framework, the presentation will outline ways
in which this has been integrated into a postgraduate counselling training program and highlight
potential applications for the education and supervision of mental health workers.
Learning Outcomes:
- Recognise the necessity of case formulation and the need to increase complexity in standard
case formulation through (a) attention to client strengths and resources, (b) attention to
social and contextual factors in which their concerns are situation, and (c) draw on a range
of therapeutic theories to expand hypotheses.
- Understand the three-stage framework of formulation and how each stage adds layers of
complexity in the form of client-centredness, context, and integration of theory.
- Apply the framework to the areas of practice, supervision and training in counselling and
psychotherapy.
