Dr Devasena Desai
Kaveri Gifted Education and Research Center
Bio/Profile: Dr. Devasena Desaireceived her doctoral degree from Jnana Prabodhini’s Institute of Psychology(JPIP), Pune in association with Utrecht University, The Netherlands in 2005.Currently she is the Associate Director for Kaveri Gifted Education and ResearchCentre since its inception from 2014 and Kaveri Counseling and EmpowermentCenter since June 2022 for Kaveri group of Institutes.
She has been a pioneer in setting upsystems by incorporating giftedness in KGI schools. She has been a parentcounselor and master trainer for almost 27 years. She has been closelyassociated with Chennai Counselors Foundation and also assisted in theirresearch wing in 2010-2016. She was awarded the Belin-Blank Fellowship in 2011,to attend their course in gifted education from Belin Blank Center atUniversity of Iowa, USA. She holds the position of Adjunct Lecturer at theUniversity of Iowa, for the past 5 years. She is associated with Tribal Mensa,Pune since its inception 20 years ago. She is associated with the European Councilfor Higher Ability (ECHA) and has presented research papers in Europe in thearea of Giftedness. Dr. Desai facilitates the Kaveri Gifted Team for the past 9years in formulating ideas for different gifted programs and services forgifted children, teachers and parents. She works in advocacy and creating thepolicy in giftedness for India. She has worked in different capacity acrossChennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Dubai. She has initiated the Kaveri
Youtube channel, and also the ‘BeingGifted’ Podcast. She is the author of 3 books, She is well traveled and she isan avid reader and loves painting.

Workshop topic: Nurturing Giftedstudents: A mental health perspective in schools.

Objective of the workshop: To understand andsupport the socio-emotional well-being of gifted students in schools.
Outcomes:
1.Comprehend the factors that affect socioemotional well-being of giftedstudents.
2.Gain ideas for different programs that work for gifted students in schools inIndia.
3.Role of school counselors and guidance in handling issues related to thegifted.
Synopsis:
Thesignificance of nurturing gifted lies with each school in India. Studentsstruggle to connect with their teachers, peers and lastly their curriculumwhich is the most fascinating aspect of their learning curve. When the abovethree connections are shaken gifted students tend to either withdraw in theclassroom or rebel, secondly they feel isolated when with peers whomisunderstand them. Lastly a curriculum that is inferior to their abilitiesbore them and creates lack of motivation. Under this premise the veryfoundation of their mental health lies, making it significant for schools tonurture gifted students.
