David ‘Bhakti’ Gotlieb brings a lifetime of experience to supervision and Healing Inner Conflict (HIC) Trainings. He has a Masters of Applied Science in Critical Psychology and a Graduate Diploma in Social Ecology(UWS). He has worked as a youth worker for Sydney City Mission’s Wilderness Program, Burnside’s Adolescent Program, 10

years as a Family Support Worker, 7 years running personal development programs for Corrective Services and 10 years developing and running a partner’s support group at Westmead Hospital’s Breast Cancer Institute. He has trained with Dr Richard Alpert (AKA Ram Dass...Be Here Now, How Can I Help?) Dr Arnie Mindell (Process Oriented Psychology), Helena Cornelius (Conflict Resolution Network).

He has recently retired from face to face counselling having seen clients for nearly forty years and through his work with extreme states of dissociation has developed ‘Healing Inner Conflict’(HIC) which is a simple method for understanding and intervening effectively with the

mechanisms that manifest as disturbing behaviors.

Topic Outline

This informative and often humorous workshop will give specific instruction on how to work with couples more effectively by helping them understand the difference between triggered and non triggered moments. This is a send alone workshop, however it will deepen the experience of

participants who do the Cognitive Distortion is ‘Healing trying to Happen’- from CBT to HIC (Healing Inner Conflict) workshop.

The biggest challenge for couples is attempting to navigate conflict situations which by definition trigger all sorts of defensive or counter-attacking techniques. By understanding the four mechanisms that cover the majority of human behaviour, couples can then understand their own individual behaviour and begin to intervene effectively in their own internal process. Then, they are more able to focus on the conflict externally without the usual triggered behaviours of voice raising, name calling, the silent treatment etc.

This workshop will show participants exactly how to pinpoint ineffective (and often insensitive) behaviours that are attempting to resolve conflict, albeit with disastrous results.

Using two sets of HIC floor cards through examples and case studies and an example of using HIC with a volunteer couple in real time, the four mechanisms as they affect the average couple will be explained using the floorboards to map the process moment by moment.

Child mechanism: Not expressing for fear of criticism, Adolescent mechanism: Acting out.

Adult mechanism: Passive aggression. Self-Medication/Distraction: Addiction.

In this workshop participants will get a clear overview of how to work with the four mechanisms as they apply to couple counselling using case studies and examples from the floor. They will receive a ‘Conflict Navigation Tools’ handout. They will also receive a copy of the e-book ‘Healing Inner Conflict’.
