Courageous Compassion | Applying Buddhist Psychology to a Contemporary Context

Courageous Compassion | Applying Buddhist Psychology to a Contemporary Context

We are living in unprecedented times where compassion-fatigue, burn-outs and exhaustion are common challenges faced by mental health professionals, educators, supervisors and healers. In what appears to be the first time, professionals are as affected as the others, and yet continue offering care in various capacities. Given the large scale impact of the pandemic, we will probably continue seeing mental health effects for the foreseeable future. We need a path through these times that is built on an understanding of our true nature and our struggles, and offers us a more enduring way to continue building on our capacities.

Buddhism offers a combination of theory and practice, or what is traditionally referred to as wisdom and compassion, that is as relevant today, as it was 2500 years ago. The path of courageous compassion is idealised as the ability to skilfully work for the benefit of all sentient beings, and is designed to break through our misconceptions that habitually limit us and contribute to our suffering.

This experiential workshop will offer a glimpse into this precious combination of the view and the path. Participants will be introduced to select methods and techniques that can help build our capacities to practice courageous compassion. These practices are being offered with the intention to help participants bring this learning into their daily lives, for themselves as well as the clients/groups they work with. The workshop will also provide interested participants with are source list that will allow them to continue on their journey of contemplation, meditation and action in the future.
